Are Expensive Dog Foods Better?

Is Highly Advertised Dog Food Really Better?

When you go to buy dog food?

You might be surprised at who’s been manufacturing and selling your dog food to you.Once upon a time a pet food company was a pet food company, not a handy division that creates profits out of by-products and waste from the other product manufacturing going on under their stock market symbol.

Two of the most visible pet food manufacturers stand out as examples: Ralston Purina sold out to British Petroleum in 1986, to the Sterling Group in 1993, then was acquired by Koch Industries in 1996 and is now a subsidiary of the Nestle corporation. Waltham, a name that includes Pedigree, Nutro, Royal Canin and Cesar among its stable of pet foods, is owned by the giant Mars Corporation. Mars was already the largest dog food packer in the world, back in 1968, when it acquired KalKan. Oh, and by the way, the chain of veterinary hospitals, Banfield, the Pet Hospital, the one that operates clinics in many PetSmart stores, is now partially owned by Mars, Inc., since 2007 when the CEO sold his shares.

On the FundingUniverse site, Ralston Purina’s statement of company perspective reads:

The corporate philosophy of Purina Mills is to continue our tradition of providing both the necessary nutritional products and the value-added services that producers, processors and retailers need to satisfy the demands of a growing end-consumer market. We remain committed to expanding our research and development to enable American agricultural entrepreneurs to capitalize on the opportunities ahead.

Not seeing anything there about taking care of the consumer and delivering a safe, quality product . . .

So, what do these mergers and acquisitions and subsidiaries mean to you? To your dog?

One of the areas of largest impact is marketing.

Consider all those Beneful ads on TV. “You only think you’re getting spoiled . . .” Well, that much is true. All of the sponsorships, from Pedigree to Eukanuba to Iams, plastered over every major dog sporting event; the inferences “top breeders recommend,” are the power of marketing bucks. Stop and think of how many bags of dog food and packages of treats have to be sold to pay for the Pedigree’s sponsorship of Westminster or Eukanuba’s AKC National Championship. By 2000, Mars, Inc. was spending over 0 million a year in advertising their brands. That’s a lot of kibbles and bits to sell to keep those companies’ — and others like them — gravy trains delivering.

But none of those ads gives you any good, concrete reasons why you should feed your pet their products. They don’t talk about protein sources or give you any real information on digestibility. They show you a nifty Border Collie or a roly-poly puppy digging into a bowl of their food like it hasn’t seen food for a week, or a Golden Retriever puppy — when there just happens to be a high profile movie being released based on a runaway best selling book about a Golden Retriever — ripping into a bag of kibble then scarfing it up as fast as he can. The ads give you the “Awwww” factor — what they don’t give you is the “Ewwww” factor. That’s why it’s so important to learn to understand what’s on the label, and it will be as obscurely described as allowable by legal standards, for example*:

Eukanuba, the first dozen ingredients: Chicken, chicken by product meal (ground, rendered parts of carcass, i.e. necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, intestines, etc.), corn meal, ground whole grain sorghum (low in digestibility), ground whole grain barley, chicken fat, fish meal (dried ground tissue of whole or fish cuttings from unspecified fish sources), brewer’s rice (milled fragments of rice kernels), natural chicken flavor, dried beet pulp (residue from sugar beets extracted during sugar manufacturing), dried egg product (obtained from egg breakers, hatchery operations, egg graders, etc., frozen, dehydrated or liquid), brewer’s dried yeast (by-product of brewing ale or beer).

But wait! It gets more interesting!

Pedigree’s “Complete Nutrition:” ground whole corn, meat meal/meat and bone meal (rendered “product” from non-specific mammal tissues, with or without bone, exclusive of added hair, hoof horn, manure, etc, except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices), corn gluten meal, animal fat (obtained from non-specific mammal and/or poultry), wheat mill run/middlings, ground wheat, natural poultry flavor, wheat flour, salt, potassium chloride, caramel color, vegetable oil.

Where’s the beef? Oh wait, that was another catchy ad campaign . . .

Protect Your Pet This Winter

With the weather starting to grow colder PDSA is urging pet owners to protect their four-legged friends from the dangers of hypothermia (low body temperature) this winter.

Hypothermia is caused by exposure to cold weather and can occur after just a few minutes in freezing temperatures.

Cold weather can cause an animal’s body temperature to plummet. This can result in hypothermia which in severe cases can be fatal.  The first sign that a pet is cold is when they shiver; however this stops if their temperature falls dangerously low.  They can then become confused and subdued, with cold ears and feet.  Their heart rate and breathing may also become slow or irregular.

Among dogs, hypothermia is more commonly seen in the small, old or sick.  Some breeds with low body fat or thin coats, such as whippets and greyhounds, are more susceptible.  Puppies and kittens are particularly vulnerable as they have difficulty controlling their body temperature and should always be kept indoors during cold weather.

PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, comments: “The first thing you should do if you suspect your pet is suffering from hypothermia or frostbite is to make sure they are dry.  Then, gradually raise their body temperature by placing them next to a well-covered hot water bottle or use a hair dryer, on a low heat.  It is very important to call or visit your vet for advice.”

Prevention is the key to stopping hypothermia.  Here are some tips from PDSA:
Do:
·         Bring pets indoors during cold temperatures
·         Keep dogs on a lead to prevent accidents and injury caused by snow and ice
·         Be wary of icy river banks and slopes leading to water, and frozen ponds – dogs can easily fall in
·         Dress vulnerable dogs in suitable dog coats when going for walks to protect them from the cold
·         Clean and dry your pet’s paws after a walk outside in the cold
·         Ask your dog’s groomer to clip the hair between the toes, to prevent snow becoming trapped and developing into ice-balls

Don’t:
·         Leave pets outside for any length of time without access to shelter and warmth
·         Allow dogs to rest on frozen ground (this can lead to frostbite)
·         Leave animals outside after exercise
·         Take dogs for long walks outside when it is cold and wet
·         Leave pets alone in a car, conservatory or caravan – hypothermia can set in very quickly!

What to feed a puppy

When it comes time to begin feeding your puppy you need to wean the puppy off the mother. When you begin this process let the mother continue to nurse the puppies one or two times per day and you will feed them one or two times per day. You will need to make a puppy mush to give to the puppies to teach them how to eat regular food.

The puppy mush will be different to the puppies so they will need a few tries before they begin to eat well on their own. The puppy mush is made of powdered milk supplement or a canned milk supplement from your local feed store or your local pet food store.

The ingredients and directions are as follows:

Step 1: Use a powdered milk supplement

Step 2: Use a small amount of named brand canned puppy food

Step 3: Mix to a mushy form or consistency

Step 4: Make sure puppy mush is warm before severing to puppies

When you start to feed your puppy the puppy mush let them eat it for about a week gradually reducing the times they are, allowed to nurse the mother. Do this until they are completely, weaned off the mother. Then began adding a quality named brand dry puppy food to the mixture. When feeding your puppy dry dog food, buy them something that has a high level of nutrients.

As well as protein that is, enriched with vitamins, and minerals that your growing puppy needs. During puppy hood, you should only feed your puppy; puppy foods for an entire year, then gradually start out by feeding them regular dog food so as not to upset their tummies. Puppies tend to get upset tummies very quick, especially when they are not used to eating a certain type of dog food. So be sure to gradually, get them used to any new food that you feed them.

After you have found the right kind of puppy food to feed your puppy, it would be a good idea to continue feeding your puppy that brand of puppy food. Many times when you change the type of food a dog eats, whether it being a puppy or an adult dog. Changing the dog’s diet could result in upsetting your dog or puppies intestinal system, if this happens it will cause your dog to vomit or to have runny stool. Sometimes if you notice, your dog or puppy chewing on grass in the yard this is a sign that his or her tummy maybe upset.

From Hairballs To Arthritis, Pet Nutritional Supplements Tries To Solve It All

We may have a lot of differences with dogs and cats in terms of anatomy and physiology but it appears we are no different in nutrition development. Just as dietary supplements have become a growing trend for us upright creatures, the current craze for our four-legged friends are nutritional supplements. Although veterinarians and other animal experts don’t seem to see eye to eye regarding this matter, nutritional supplements for pets have become a major force in the animal feed department.

Besides the vast number of producers and distributors of nutritional supplements for pets, these more natural alternatives to pet food come in increasingly specific varieties. Above and beyond the vitamins, minerals typical of a food supplement, there are those with anti-oxidants and immuno-stimulants, digestion and elimination supplements, and high energy nutritional supplements.

Our pets won’t get left behind when it comes to staying slim, too, as there are nutritional supplements for pets that are specifically designed for weight loss! Also, if your kitten or puppy does not get enough milk, there are supplements that act as milk replacer!

There are even nutritional supplements for pets that aid in keeping them well-groomed. Skin/coat supplements and laxatives and hairball treatments make it easier for you to keep your pet always looking trim. Unless you’re one who garbs your pet in cute shirts, their basic all-around outfit is their skin or fur.

In the same way that we suffer stress and pain, our pets do, too. But pet supplements providers have got this covered! There are nutritional supplements for pets that serve to reduce pain, stress, and anxiety. If your pet experiences arthritis and joint pains in particular, there are supplements especially for that! These are said to be pretty helpful also as prevention to strengthen your pet’s bones even before arthritis sets in.

It’s interesting to note the sort of disclaimer that’s always present in the promotional materials. Most nutritional supplements promise a lot of benefits but it’s always balanced off with notices that results may vary depending on your pet’s response. So one might say it doesn’t really guarantee you anything. Pretty consistent with human nutritional supplements. Basically, it leaves you to choose whether to give it a try and see if it works.

There are countless testimonies as to the effectiveness of certain nutritional supplements for pets, some even from certified experts and doctors. But, it’s still you who decides what’s best for your pet. At the very least, giving ALL or a random pick of these supplements might not be a good idea. Consulting your personal veterinarian is.

At the onset, you should consult your veterinarian about the diet of your pet. Some pet specialists argue that nutritional supplements for pets are unnecessary since the formulated pet food already has sufficient nutrients and you only have to choose the best kind for your pet. Whether they are right or not, it is smart to find out what is or what’s not in the food you’re already feeding your pet.

Myths About Your Dogs Diet

Canine nutrition hasn’t become as laden with diet fads as have human meal planning. But it has accumulated a number of myths which survive the ridicule of the veterinary profession. As you acquire a dog, your more experienced friends will shower you with advice, which may include some of the following affirmations:

-    ”A clove of garlic keeps worms away” Garlic has enjoyed a reputation for centuries in the folk medicine of many cultures as an antiseptic, a treatment for high blood pressure, etc. But if your dog really does have worms, (and most of them do at one time or another), the quickest way to get rid of them is to have your veterinarian give him a specific worming medicine under his supervision.

-    ”Raw meat makes a dog vicious” Raw or cooked meat is essential to a dogs nutrition. Fifty percent is the standard ration, and it may compare as much as 75 percent of his diet. If he is fed only meat, he may become high strung, not because the meat is raw, but because he is being given an unbalanced diet.

-    ”A sugar cube dipped in coffee is good for a dogs heart” It is particularly good for his morale, because it probably means that he is sharing your after dinner coffee with you. Give it occasionally as a harmless treat, but not as a regular “medicine”, and not as a heart remedy.

-    ”Dogs cannot digest starch” They cannot digest uncooked starch, but they can cope with most cooked ones such as rice, whole wheat bread, and macaroni. However, dogs do not receive much nourishment from these foods.

-    ”Sugar causes worms” Sugar is quick source of energy for dogs, as it is far us. Worms are caused by worm larvae. A puppy may get worms from his mother, and an adult dog may get them from infected food or drink, from the saliva or feces of an infected dog, or from swallowing fleas and lice which act as hosts to tapeworm eggs- but never from sugar.

-    ”Raw eggs improve dog’s coat” A raw egg yolk from time to time enriches a dog’s diet. Cooked eggs are an acceptable substitute for meat in an emergency. But the best coat conditioner is far, especially unsaturated fat, rich in vitamin E, such as linseed and wheat germ oil. The eggs reputation as a coat conditioner is probably due to the fact that yolk is mostly fat.

-    ”Milk causes diarrhea in an adult dog” Milk is healthy for all dogs. A bowl of milk with a beaten egg yolk and a couple of pieces of whole wheat toast or dog biscuits is a standard supper dish in many kennels. There are various causes for diarrhea, including internal parasites, indigestion, a change of diet, food poisoning, certain contagious diseases- and sometime, but not always, milk.

Knowledge and concern are important in feeding a growing puppy whose nutrition is the foundation of his future health. But common sense is all you need to feed an adult dog correctly, as his own experience will help guide you most of the way.

Skin and Coat Problems in Dogs and Cats

The skin, your pet’s largest organ, acts as a barrier against harmful invasions from the environment. As an organ of elimination, symptoms of disease often show up in the skin and the body rids itself of toxins

Skin problems are probably the most common ailments seen in dogs. Usually they are not a disease in themselves, but a symptom of another underlying problem.

The most common reason for skin problems in both dogs and cats is an allergy. Foods, pollens, dust or medications may cause signs of allergy. Problems can also show up due to dietary deficiency or poor diet in general. Symptoms include such as itching, redness, and poor coat quality.

If no other reason for the problem can be found, it is time to look for food allergies. Changing to a premium or home-made dog food can usually make a big difference in a short time. Often simply adding raw meat to the diet is enough to see an improvement.

If the problem persists, or the pet is already on a healthy diet, then you must look at the specific ingredients in the food. Beef, chicken, corn and soy are the most common allergens, but cats and dogs, like people, can be allergic to anything. Try eliminating the above four things first, if that doesn’t work a more drastic “elimination diet” may be necessary. This usually takes at least 6-8 weeks to get a good reading.

If no food allergy can be identified, or if eliminating an offending food has not solved the problem, then you must look to the environment – inside as well as outside. Once an allergic reaction has been allowed to continue for some time, the immune system is taxed and the body may become sensitive to other irritants.

Play detective! Ask yourself if anything has changed in the house recently; new carpeting, new cabinetry, fresh paint? These things can all give off chemicals which may cause illness. Are the symptoms seasonal? Pollens are a common allergen, and difficult to avoid, especially for a dog. Did the symptoms start suddenly? What happened just before they appeared – vaccinations? Other illness? Emotional upset? Finding and eliminating the cause can be a long and difficult process.

Essential Fatty Acids, also known as Omega-3 and Omega-6 are important nutrients for the skin and coat of dogs and cats. You might also consider certain herbs, such as Milk Thistle or Dandelion, which support the liver and help the body detoxify. There are many natural topical products that can be used to calm the symptoms.

Bathing is not always the answer. If the dog’s coat is dry, bathing may just make matters worse. If you must bathe, use a gentle shampoo. For dogs or cats with itchy skin, look for oatmeal as one of the ingredients in a pet shampoo.

Another common cause of itching and redness for dogs and cats is flea bite dermatitis. Not all animals are allergic, but fleas will at least cause scratching or biting in all pets simply because they are annoying! Flea allergies however, cause the pests to be more than just an annoyance. Symptoms of flea allergy include hair loss, redness, and sometimes sores kown as “hot spots”.

If you suspect your pet has fleas but you haven’t actually seen any, look for the tell-tale black “specks” at the base of the hairs. Fleas particularly love the areas at the base of the tail, ears and hind legs (where they meet the belly). To determine if the specks are flea dirt (dried blood) and not just dirt, put some on a white paper or cloth and wet them. If they turn red, you’ve got fleas.

Some diseases cause symptoms of the skin and coat. Thyroid imbalances may cause dull, flaky or greasy coat and sometimes hair loss. Skin and ear infections are common with Cushing’s Disease.

There are some specific skin diseases as well. Mange is caused by a mite and causes lesions and hair loss, usually around the mouth and eyes. This most often clears up on its own, but some dogs and cats cannot rid themselves of the mites and have a more severe case. Ringworm is a highly contagious fungus affecting cats, dogs and people (especially children). It shows up as circular lesions that are raw, hairless and scaly. The disease spreads rapidly.

Boredom or anxiety can cause a dog to lick its paws repeatedly and constantly, resulting in “lick granulomas”. These are raised nodules, often rough and scaly. There is also a group of autoimmune diseases called Pemphigus which cause scaly skin, scabs and pustules. Some breeds are particularly susceptible to the disease.

The Myth Of Terminal Curiosity And Cats

Curiosity killed that cat? I think they got it wrong. We’ve been laboring under the stifling, perhaps even deadly, weight of a botched adage. The ‘osity’ responsible for the feline fatality had to be of a ‘serious’ not a ‘curious’ nature. The suffix “osis” according to my New American Webster Handy College Dictionary means “an abnormal condition of.” The difference between “osis” and “osity” literally “is” “ity”. “ity” along with its partner in crime “bity” amount to nothing significant. So I will use “osis” and “osity” interchangeably.

’Curiosity’, then, is an abnormal condition of being curious, and is liable to expose you to the risks of a few bruised extremities and egos, a few startled looks of surprise, but an ever-growing knowledge of the world around you. A mild state of curiosity might just spice up your life a trifle. A rampant case of curiosity may batter and bruise, but the main risks are of a life of adventure, and a chronic smile. The curious cat is the cat that knows, or will discover, whereof he purrs. His brain cells are always on the move, and his life is comparatively rich, and mouse laden.

”Seriousity” on the other paw, is the weighty and grave state of grimaced jaws, humorless eyes, and ‘tail dragging through the litter box’ anxiety. It is the abnormal state of being serious. The mildly serious cat merely spends too much time looking behind to see what’s following him (frequently just his tail). Often quick to startle, this tremulous tabby is often referred to as a ‘fraidy cat’. Even mild ‘seriousity’, if chronic, may result in ruined digestion, a less than satisfying social life (fewer rubs under the whiskers), and troublesome hairballs.

A rampant case of ‘serious’, particularly the condition that is left when you take yourself too seriously, may involve a batter, just like curiosity. However, the next step isn’t likely to be curiosity’s mild bruising accompanied by learning, but a deep-fat frying, often accompanied by a devouring. Too much ‘serious’ tends to reduce our mental agility. A real serious cat is much more likely to limp away from a 10 foot drop, than spryly walk away like his relaxedly curious cousin. Sufficiently serious, and the cat will bounce away from the fall, exhibiting the stock market phenomenon known as the ‘dead cat bounce’ (i.e. even a dead cat will bounce if it falls far enough).

So, how do we switch from serious to curious, and save the cat? My prescription begins like this– start with a good stretch followed by a hearty laugh. Cats are great models for this mind freeing stretch. Watch a cat stretch. They seem to be able to employ every muscle. Stretching releases muscular tensions, increases circulation, and feels incredible. So stretch, and try to involve every muscle you’ve got. Then laugh. Nothing blows through a morbidly serious mental cloud faster than the warm breeze of a good hearty laugh. If you can’t jump right into a good laugh, start with a smile, graduate into a chuckle, and finally let yourself go and laugh with your whole body. Force yourself into the smile to laugh progression, even though you may not feel like it. Pretend that you do. Follow the phony laugh with a good stretch, and laugh again. I promise by the third time you follow this recipe of stretching and laughing you’ll be feeling like you’ve dipped into the catnip, and you’ll be ready to chase a canary.

Now that you’re feeling good, it’s time to get curious. Start seriously asking yourself non-serious questions-like “…exactly how good can I feel?” and “…what opportunities are out there for me today?” Train your brain to be curious, not serious.

If you just can’t let the cat out of the serious bag on your own, you might want to explore the possibility of using hypnosis to help you with the ‘de-bagging’. A hypnotist has tools to help release long standing stress and reduce the production of ‘seriousity’. A hypnotist can also help re-tune your mind to curiosity, and help prevent another morbid cat catastrophe.

According to acupuncturists, diseases are produced when the flow of energy is blocked in certain parts of the body. In order to release the energy flow, tiny needles are strategically placed on corresponding points. It’s used the exact way is in humans and has produced proven results in reducing pain.

Natural Herbal and nutritional supplements

Homeopathy is another popular thing dog owners do when using alternative healthcare methods. Homeopathy is based on the principal that what harms can cure. Basically how this works is that plant extracts are used in minimum doses, with certain extracts producing similar effects that the disease has. However there are profession homeopathy veterinarians that know exactly what there are doing so it’s essential that you go to them instead of doing this yourself.

Many owners are using homeopathy as an alternative to vaccinations for their dogs. Some studies have conducted that vaccinations can be m to a dog’s immune system. Vaccinations are designed to stimulate the immune system in a natural way and the dogs body could over-react to the vaccination causing more problems. Homeopathic nosodes can come in either pill or liquid form instead of being injected like vaccinations, and the cost can potentially be lower than vaccinations.
